About Surrogacy

Surrogacy is an assisted-reproduction path in which intended parents partner with a gestational surrogate who carries and cares for their baby(ies) until birth. Families turn to surrogacy when they need this support to begin or expand their family.

In simple terms, surrogacy is an arrangement in which someone gives birth for someone else. Gestational surrogacy helps people who cannot carry a pregnancy become parents.

Surrogacy is a process that calls for medical and legal expertise, plus steady support from start to finish. People who pursue surrogacy to have a child are often called Intended Parents (IPs).

Surrogacy Process

With IVF, embryos are created in a lab at a fertility clinic. Intended parents may use their own genetic material, or an egg donor may be part of the plan. An embryo is then transferred to a gestational carrier, who carries the baby(ies) to term.

Intended Parents

Surrogacy opens a path for couples and individuals of many backgrounds, ages, and sexual orientations to grow their families.

Intended parents who choose surrogacy often include:

  • Heterosexual couples facing infertility challenges
  • Gay and Trans parents and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Intended mothers who cannot safely carry a pregnancy
  • Intended parents with a genetic condition or health concern they do not wish to pass on to a child

Every surrogacy journey is one of a kind, and we are proud to have helped so many remarkable families grow in the United States and around the world.

Our people and our programs are what make the difference.

We know—often firsthand—that welcoming a baby through surrogacy is both deeply meaningful and complex. That is why our team includes mental health professionals and lawyers, intake associates and accountants, program managers and coordinators, all working across specialized teams so parents and surrogates can navigate every part of the journey together.

Beyond that, as a leading agency of parents, former surrogates, and egg donors, our lived experience helps us design programs that fit many kinds of families—with unlimited matching, deep experience across diverse communities, and long-term support plans.

How We Match Surrogates and Parents

Our experienced team carefully pairs intended parents and surrogates we believe will meaningfully shape one another’s lives. These thoughtful matches are guided by our proprietary MatchMade™ approach to foster a healthy, genuine relationship with your surrogate.

Our matching specialists have successfully matched over 3,600 sets of parents. We recommend the right match by weighing the criteria below:

  • Personality
  • Preferences for communication, number of embryos to transfer, and views on termination
  • Legal considerations and location

Once a match is mutually agreed upon by all parties, Promise encourages intended parents and surrogates to share openly with one another, strengthening their bond through the journey—and beyond.
